Biba leze

This is one of the dreamiest little rhymes in the Slovenian nursery, closer to a lullaby than a game. Its hero is a biba — a tiny crawling creature, the nursery word for a little bug or a crawling baby — inching off on a fabulous journey toward “that mountain” where no one else can go. What waits there is a child’s paradise of plenty: a honey garden below the mountain, cakes hanging from the trees, honey dripping over the flatbread, and a spring that flows with milk where you may wish for whatever you like.

There is even a soft, wandering ending: the little bug, having drunk from the spring, loses the right path — the way a child’s mind wanders off toward sleep. The whole rhyme has that quality of a half-dream, all sweetness and drifting, which is why it is often sung quietly at bedtime. It is a Slovenian folk children’s rhyme with no recorded author — the archives that carry it label it simply “ljudska” — and its magic land of honey and cake is exactly the kind of place a small child likes to fall asleep imagining. The third line varies from one printing to the next — a school songbook from Mengeš has “do biser gore”, to the pearl mountain, where the archives have “do tiste gore”; the text here follows the Slovenske narodne pesmi archive.
