About Little Songbook
Little Songbook is a small, carefully-made collection of traditional children's songs from around the world — the words as they are actually sung, an English translation where the song is not already in English, and an honest account of where each one comes from.
What this is
Most children's songs online arrive stripped of everything that makes them interesting: no origin, no translation, no indication of who wrote them or when, and often no confidence that the words are even right. This site is an attempt at the opposite. Every entry gives the song in its own language, says where it came from, explains what it means, and cites its sources wherever a published source exists.
The collection currently holds 157 songs from 14countries in 11 languages. It is deliberately small and growing slowly, because each entry takes real work.
How songs are chosen
A song earns a place here if it meets all three of these:
- It is a genuine children's song — sung by children, passed down, and part of a living tradition rather than a recent commercial jingle.
- There is something true and specific to say about it beyond the lyric itself: where it comes from, what a word means, how the game is played.
- It is singable by an adult with no musical training, from the page, at bedtime.
About the translations
Translations here aim for sense rather than singability unless a well-established English singing version already exists — in which case that is what you get, clearly labelled. Where a song uses a non-Latin script, the original script is given first — with a transliteration where one exists — then the English. Each block is marked with its own language so that screen readers pronounce it correctly.
About the illustrations
Every song carries its own cover illustration, drawn from a one-line brief written for that song — the same soft, storybook style throughout, so the collection reads as one book rather than a scrapbook.
Corrections
