This is one of the most fondly remembered Slovenian children’s songs, and its bright, tumbling refrain — tjaram-da-dam — is instantly recognisable to anyone who grew up in Slovenia. Its message is simple and warm: this is a golden day, having a friend means you are never alone, and happiness is something you can hold on a string. The second verse turns a little wistful, longing to run away from a world “locked in grey concrete” to somewhere the meadows are still green — and to a happiness that needs no string at all.
It is the title song of the 1977 film Sreča na vrvici, based on Vitan Mal’s book Teci, teci kuža moj, about a boy and his dog.
