This is a marching song and a work song rolled into one, and it sends children off to do something worthwhile. A little “troop” falls into line — one behind another, sturdy and cheerful — and marches away to help a boy named Jurček with a good deed: building a little house so that he can hide his rabbits safely from the fox. It is a song about cooperation, purpose and getting a job done together.
The second verse turns into the pleasure of the work itself: the saw sings žiga žaga, the hammer beats rom, pom, pom, and everyone labours away “in the best of spirits”.
