Meaning and origin
This is a song about a dog being exactly what a child most wants a dog to be: clever, and faithful, and protective. In the first verses he shows off — watching, wagging his tail, sitting up, lying down, giving a paw — and guards the house, barking if no one is home. Pazi is both “he watches” and “watch out!”, and by the last verse it has become the dog’s name: Pazi naš, “our Pazi”. It is the whole repertoire of a good family dog, turned into a song a small child can act out.
The last verse is where its warmth lies. When little Jurček the toddler goes tired to bed, the dog lies down across the doorway so that no thief can carry the sleeping boy away. That image — the loyal dog on guard through the night — gives the song its quiet emotional pull, a sense of being watched over and safe. It is credited to Janez Bitenc (1925–2005), the composer of hundreds of Slovenian children’s songs, who wrote the words to many of them; the sources we found do not say separately who wrote the words of this one. The text printed here is the one a Grosuplje kindergarten publishes with the score; another common version sings the last verse as “kuža pazi, k vratom leže” (“the doggy watches, lies down by the door”).
