Meaning and origin
This is as close to a national children’s anthem as Slovenia has, and its message fits in one phrase: dobra volja je najbolja — “good cheer is the best.” Around that motto the whole song turns. The little bird sings it, the brook murmurs it, the boy’s own footsteps echo it: be merry every day, laugh, whistle songs, and you will catch happiness; the mopers and sourpusses can go their own way. Whoever sings merry songs, it promises, walks the world with light feet.
It comes from the beloved 1951 film Kekec, about a brave, kind, resourceful boy of the Alps who is the hero of a whole series of Slovenian mountain stories. The music was composed by Marjan Kozina and the words written by Frane Milčinski - Ježek, and the song has never lost its place in Slovenian childhood. Its images are all of the mountains Kekec belongs to — the bird, the leaping brook, the swift wind, the white stars on the peaks — and its irrepressible good cheer is exactly the quality that makes Kekec himself so loved.
