Meaning and origin
This is a song in love with the high pastures. In the traditional Alpine way of life, herders drove their cattle up to the planine — the mountain meadows — for the summer, and this cheerful folk song celebrates everything good about it: plenty of milk to drink, and sunshine up on the heights while the valley below is still buried in morning mist. Every verse rings out with the herdsman’s happy cry, juhej, juhej!
But it does not take itself too seriously. The shepherdess grazes the cows and has her fun, and then comes the comic turn: as she cooks the porridge (žganci), a fly falls into her pot — and the herdsman, still cheerful, changes his refrain to “eat that porridge yourself!” That little joke, tucked into a song of alpine contentment, is very much the folk spirit. It has no known author; it is a Slovenian folk song, one of many about the sunny, milky, fly-in-the-porridge life of the summer pastures.
