The little fox is a right cunning beast, under a rock she keeps her quarters, she wags her little tail, she scratches with her claws, and asks whether the hunter is home. Oh, the hunter sits on a stump, holding a loaded gun in his hand, and waits for her, to shoot her dead, if only she'll show herself. But the little fox was cunning, she slipped out the back hole, and flees for the woods, laughing sweetly, thumbing her nose at the hunter.

Meaning and origin
This is a comic folk song about the oldest trickster in the woods — the fox — and it clearly takes her side. She is introduced as a “right cunning beast”, tucked into her den under a rock, wagging her tail and scratching, and cheekily wondering aloud whether the hunter is home. The hunter, meanwhile, sits grimly on a stump with a loaded gun, waiting for her to show herself so he can shoot.
Of course she never does. Being cunning, she simply slips out the back hole of her den and bolts for the woods, laughing sweetly and — the crowning insult — “making the fig” at the outwitted hunter, an old gesture of mockery. It is a Slovenian folk song with no known author, and it belongs to the great tradition of fox tales in which the small, clever creature always outwits the big one with the weapon. The child singing it is invited, unmistakably, to cheer for the fox.
